We were asked to build a velux loft conversion in Thirsk for an old-period home. The family were expecting a new arrival, so creating extra space was essential.
The property didn’t have the biggest of lofts, so we knew we would have to use all our experience to create a space that could accommodate their growing needs – especially once Covid-19 hit and the family were working from home.
The project was also delayed due to the Covid-19 lockdown, so once restrictions were lifted: time was of the essence!
The client first approached us with architect plans already in hand. However, once we visited the site, we could see that their chosen layout wouldn’t work effectively with the space they had.
In the original plans, the new staircase would break through two downstairs bedrooms and the bathroom, leaving insufficient height at the top of the new stairs. We changed the layout to incorporate a dropped landing, so the stairs wouldn’t intervene in any other room.
The dropped landing allowed us to create a light and airy home office, family bathroom, and spacious nursery for the new arrival. We then sourced pitched pine doors, balustrades, fixtures and fittings to match the rest of the house.
